How to say ㅓ

어

Drop the jaw a little, keep the lips relaxed and unrounded, and pull the tongue slightly back. ㅓ is close to the u in English 'cup' but with the mouth a bit more open and rounder at the back.

ㅓ (eo) is a vertical vowel and sits to the right of the consonant: 어 (eo), 머리 (head), 엄마 (mom).

Where ㅓ sits in a block

Because ㅓ (eo) stands tall, the consonant must squeeze to the left. In 거 (geo) the ㄱ (giyeok) is narrow and the vowel takes the right-hand side of the block.

A bare ㅓ (eo) sound needs a consonant in front, because Korean spelling always wants one: 어 (eo) uses the silent ㅇ.

ㅓ and ㅗ are the pair learners confuse most. For 어 the lips stay relaxed; for 오 they round forward into a small circle.

The romanization eo leads learners to say e + o. ㅓ is one sound, not two: 어 is a single short vowel.

A word pair shows the contrast: 선 (line) versus 손 (hand). With ㅓ (eo), in the first word the vowel is ㅓ (eo), in the second it is ㅗ.

Why ㅓ looks the way it does

ㅓ is the standing line of the person with the dot on its left, following the Hunminjeongeum design. The dot became the short stroke you draw first.

Behind ㅓ (eo) stands the Hangul vowel recipe: a sky dot, an earth line and a person line, combined in different positions.
