Casual, polite and formal please in Korean

주세요 is how you ask for something: put the thing first and add 주세요, as in 물 주세요 (water, please). After a verb it asks someone to do something for you: 도와주세요 (please help me). It is the polite request form of 주다 (to give).

Which one to use

주세요 is the everyday choice in restaurants and shops. 줘 is only for close friends. Adding 좀 (a little) softens the request: 물 좀 주세요.

How to pronounce 주세요

주세요

Say ju – se – yo in three even beats. 주 is like "joo" and 세 like "seh". There is no stressed syllable, unlike English "please".

Sound rule

Read it as ju-se-yo (juseyo). Say each syllable evenly; the stress does not fall on one syllable as in English 'please'.

주세요 letter by letter

주세요 has 3 syllable blocks and 13 strokes in all. It uses 6 different letters: ㅈ ㅜ ㅅ ㅔ ㅇ ㅛ. Each block is read from the first consonant to the vowel and then the final consonant at the bottom.

How to write 주세요 stroke by stroke

Write 주세요 one block at a time: 주, 세, 요. Inside every block go from the first consonant to the vowel and then the final consonant, following the numbered strokes.

English 'please' goes anywhere in a sentence, so learners try 주세요 at the start. In Korean it comes last: 커피 주세요, not 주세요 커피.

How to practice

Build three orders with foods you know: 물 주세요, 김밥 주세요, 메뉴 주세요.

The -어 주세요 pattern

To ask someone to do something for you, put the verb in its -어/아 form and add 주세요: 기다려 주세요 (please wait), 천천히 말해 주세요 (please speak slowly), 사진 찍어 주세요 (please take a picture).

부탁 for favours

부탁 means a favour. 부탁해요 or 부탁드립니다 says "please, I am asking you", often after explaining what you need: 이거 좀 부탁해요 (please take care of this for me).
