A common mistake with 예쁘다

Saying 예쁘어요. The ㅡ drops: 예뻐요.

How to practice

Compliment small things: 가방이 예뻐요, 사진이 예뻐요.

Forms of 예쁘다

예뻐요 is "it is pretty" and 예뻤어요 is "it was pretty". Before a noun it is 예쁜, as in 예쁜 옷. As an adverb it is 예쁘게: 예쁘게 웃어요 (she smiles prettily). 예뻐지다 means "to become pretty".

예쁘다 for kind words and good behaviour

예쁘다 is not only about looks. Parents and teachers say 말을 예쁘게 해요 (you speak so nicely) or 마음이 예뻐요 (you have a lovely heart) to praise kind words and actions.

Why the ㅡ disappears

예쁘다 belongs to the ㅡ-dropping group: when an ending starting with 어 is added, the ㅡ of 쁘 falls out and 어 joins the consonant. So 예쁘 + 어요 becomes 예뻐요, the same way 바쁘다 becomes 바빠요.
