What sound does ㄿ make at the end of a syllable?

ㄿ (rieul pieup) is a double final consonant made of ㄹ and ㅍ (pieup), and at the end of a syllable only the last letter, ㅍ, is heard, as [ㅂ] (a short p). ㄿ appears in only a few verbs. 읊다 (to recite) is the one most learners meet, usually in poetry and speeches. Start with 읊다 (to recite), which is [읍따] by itself and [을퍼요] in 읊어요.

The last letter is the one you hear, so ㄿ is read as a ㅂ-stop before a consonant or at the end of a word. 읊다 is [읍따], with the next consonant made tense.

Before a vowel, the ㅍ travels forward and is pronounced fully with its puff: 읊어요 is [을퍼요].

Say 읊다 (to recite) on its own first, as [읍따], and then 읊어요, which is read [을퍼요].

Before a consonant the ㅍ is read as a ㅂ-stop and the next consonant turns tense, and before a vowel the ㄹ stays while the ㅍ moves on.

With ㄿ (rieul-pieup), say these forms aloud and compare each reading with the spelling: 읊고 [읍꼬], 읊지 [읍찌], 읊은 [을픈].

Think of ㅍ as a lip-pop that is cut short to a closed p unless a vowel is waiting.

Exceptions and special cases for ㄿ

Unlike ㄼ and ㄾ, ㄿ is read from its last letter, not its first. This is the same type of pattern as ㄺ and ㄻ.

A common slip with ㄿ

Learners often read 읊다 as [을따], using the ㄹ. The written ㅍ becomes a ㅂ-stop and the word is [읍따].

Link ㄿ with ㄺ and ㄻ in your mind: all three are read from the last letter. Then link ㄼ, ㄽ and ㄾ as the group read from the first.

Under the vowel you write ㄹ and then ㅍ, both shrunk to fit. The pair needs seven strokes in all, 3 strokes plus 4 strokes.

For ㄿ (rieul-pieup), write the vowel first, then the two parts of ㄿ (rieul-pieup) under it, left to right, keeping the whole block inside one square.

The two letters inside ㄿ

Look at the ingredients: ㄹ (rieul) comes from the tip of the tongue with a quick touch of the tongue tip, and ㅍ comes from both lips with a strong puff of air.

In the case of ㄿ (rieul-pieup), if either ingredient feels shaky, review the pages for ㄹ and ㅍ first.

Where ㄿ sits in a block

In 읊다 (to recite) the first block 읊 is made of ㅇ + ㅡ + ㄿ (rieul-pieup), so the double final sits at the bottom.

With ㄿ (rieul-pieup), only one final spot exists under a vowel, so two consonants crowd into it and the reading rules decide which sound survives.

ㄿ among the other double finals

Of the eleven double finals, ㄺ and ㄻ share ㄿ's habit of keeping the last letter, and ㄳ, ㄵ, ㄶ, ㄼ, ㄽ, ㄾ, ㅀ, and ㅄ keep the opposite letter.

For ㄿ (rieul-pieup), sorting the eleven pairs into first-letter and last-letter groups turns a long list into two small rules.
