A common slip with 타
Learners often read 타 and 다 the same. 타 needs a clear puff of air; without it, a Korean listener hears 다.
How 타 is used
타 begins the verb 타다 (to ride) and the noun 타조 (ostrich), and the first block of 탁자 (table) is 타 plus a final ㄱ, which gives 탁.
The opening consonant of this block is made with the tip of the tongue, and its sound is like t with a strong puff, as in tea.
타 with a final consonant
| Block | Reading | Final |
|---|---|---|
| 탁 | tak | ㄱ = k |
| 탄 | tan | ㄴ = n |
| 탈 | tal | ㄹ = l |
| 탐 | tam | ㅁ = m |
| 탑 | tap | ㅂ = p |
| 탕 | tang | ㅇ = ng |
In the case of 타 (ta), six common endings turn this block into 탁 (tak), 탄 (tan), 탈 (tal), 탐 (tam), 탑 (tap), 탕 (tang).
With 타 (ta), compare the closings one by one: k (ㄱ), n (ㄴ), l (ㄹ), m (ㅁ), p (ㅂ), ng (ㅇ).
Add ㄱ under 타 and you get 탁 (tak), closing on a quiet k. Put ㄴ at the bottom of 타 for 탄 (tan), closing on a hummed n. Add ㄹ under 타 and you get 탈 (tal), closing on a tongue-tip l.
Put ㅁ at the bottom of 타 for 탐 (tam), closing on a lip-closed m. Put ㅂ at the bottom of 타 for 탑 (tap), closing on a lip-closed p. Put ㅇ at the bottom of 타 for 탕 (tang), closing on the ng of song.
ㅌ with other vowels
Keep ㅌ (tieut) and swap the vowel to get 타 (ta), 터 (teo), 토 (to), 투 (tu), 트 (teu), 티 (ti).
타 next to 카 and 파
Before 타 in the starter row comes 카 (ka), whose consonant uses the back of the tongue for a strong puff of air.
