Sound: pa.

How the block 파 is built

In 파, ㅍ (pieup) fills the left half of the square and ㅏ fills the right half.

ㅍ is short and wide, with its bottom line a little longer than its top.

With 파 (pa), with no final consonant the space under the pair stays empty; add one and the block becomes 팍 (pak), 판 (pan), 팔 (pal) and so on.

How to read 파

파

On its own, 파 is a green onion.

The opening letter ㅍ supplies the first sound and ㅏ finishes the block, giving pa.

Let the lips pop open with a strong puff of air; if a hand held in front of your mouth does not feel the breath, you are closer to 바.

1
First ㅍ (pieup)

Draw the top line from left to right. Then below it on the left, draw a short vertical line down. Then on the right, draw a second short vertical line down. Then draw the bottom line from left to right, longer than the top.

2
Then ㅏ (a) on the right

A long vertical line first, then a short line to the right from its middle.

파 takes six strokes in total: 4 for ㅍ and 2 for ㅏ.

Colour and food words start with 파: 파란색 (blue), 파 (green onion), 파인애플 (pineapple). Write them and keep ㅍ small beside the vowel.

A common slip with 파

Learners often write English f words with 파 and then say an f sound, as in 파티 (party). Korean has no f: 파 is always a breathy p.

How 파 is used

파 on its own means green onion, and it also opens 파도 (wave) and 파티 (party), so a small word list can be built around it.

The opening consonant of this block is made with both lips, and its sound is like p with a strong puff, as in pillar.

팍 pakㄱ = k
판 panㄴ = n
팔 palㄹ = l
팜 pamㅁ = m
팝 papㅂ = p
팡 pangㅇ = ng

For 파 (pa), adding a final gives the family 팍 (pak), 판 (pan), 팔 (pal), 팜 (pam), 팝 (pap), 팡 (pang).

In the case of 파 (pa), each ending is a closed sound, k for ㄱ, n for ㄴ, l for ㄹ, m for ㅁ, p for ㅂ, ng for ㅇ.

Close 파 with ㄱ and you read 팍 (pak), closing on a quiet k. Close 파 with ㄴ and you read 판 (pan), closing on a hummed n. Close 파 with ㄹ and you read 팔 (pal), closing on a tongue-tip l.

Close 파 with ㅁ and you read 팜 (pam), closing on a lip-closed m. Close 파 with ㅂ and you read 팝 (pap), closing on a lip-closed p. Close 파 with ㅇ and you read 팡 (pang), closing on the ng of song.

ㅍ with other vowels

Same opening, six vowels: 파 (pa), 퍼 (peo), 포 (po), 푸 (pu), 프 (peu), 피 (pi).

파 next to 타 and 하

Set 파 (pa) beside 하 (ha): the vowel ㅏ (a) is identical, and the difference lives in ㅍ versus ㅎ, a strong puff of air against a breathy h.

Before 파 in the starter row comes 타 (ta), whose consonant uses the tip of the tongue for a strong puff of air.
